Rep. John McGuire Supports the Agent Raul Gonzalez Officer Safety Act

February 13, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative John McGuire (VA-05), voted for H.R. 35, the Agent Raul Gonzalez Officer Safety Act, legislation that imposes criminal and immigration penalties for individuals who intentionally flee a pursuing Border Patrol agent or law enforcement officer assisting Border Patrol while operating a motor vehicle. The legislation was introduced by Rep. Juan Ciscomani.

“We cannot support our border and keep Americans safe unless we support our law enforcement,” said Rep. John McGuire. “At present, illegal aliens can cross our border, and even if they are caught, they can run away from police and disappear into our communities without consequence. But that stops now. Thanks to Congressman Juan Ciscomani’s Agent Raul Gonzalez Officer Safety Act, we can now increase penalties for illegal aliens who try to run away from border patrol, and we can protect our communities.”

Background:

  • Rep. John McGuire cosponsored this bill.

  • The Agent Raul Gonzalez Officer Safety Act is named after a Border Patrol agent killed in a high-speed chase last year while pursuing a group of illegal immigrants in Texas.

  • The legislation provides a federal criminal penalty for individuals who intentionally evade Border Patrol agents or law enforcement officers assisting Border Patrol.

  • The legislation establishes penalties for individuals who flee from the police. Penalties can include mandatory prison time for those causing death or serious injury.

  • Furthermore, the illegal aliens detained under the provisions of the bill would be inadmissible to the United States and subject to removal.
