Rep. John McGuire Launches First Annual Congressional Art Competition
LYNCHBURG, VA. – U.S. Representative John McGuire (VA-05), today announced the launch of the Congressional Art Competition for high school students in Virginia’s Fifth Congressional District.
“My favorite artist is my best friend, my wife, Tracy, so I am thankful that she is going to help lead the Art Competition,” said Rep. John McGuire. “The winning artwork will hang in the Capitol for Members of Congress, constituents, and visitors from around the world to see. In Virginia’s Fifth, we have so many talented artists in the community, and I am looking forward to showcasing the many talents of our constituents.”
Each Spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each Congressional District. Since the Artistic Discovery competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated.
Students submit entries to their representative’s office, and panels of district artists and art teachers select the winning entries. Winners are recognized both in their District and at an annual awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. The winning works are displayed for one year at the U.S. Capitol.
If you intend to participate, please email your intention to VA05artcompetition@mail.house.gov. In the email, please include your full name, address, phone number, high school, and high school art teacher.

**Submission reception for all artists will be distributed once your email is received by our office.**
